Ugandan Law Firm Signum Advocates has enhanced its Energy and Dispute Resolution Practices with the appointment of Patson Arinaitwe & Batanda Gerald as Partners in its Energy & Dispute Resolution teams.
An experienced Energy & Dispute Resolution Lawyer, Patson joins from Sebalu & Lule, and will head the firm's team of experts across the Energy, Infrastructure, Oil & Gas sectors. Patson will also lend his credence to the Dispute Resolution and Employment Law Practice teams.
Patson brings to the team over nine (9) years experience, advising on some of the biggest energy and infrastructure projects and handling complex disputes at both trial and appellate levels as well as in arbitration. He has experience advising clients from different sectors including energy and extractive industries, petroleum, insurance, banking and finance, telecommunication, transport, agriculture among others. He is also experienced in litigation and has undertaken specialized training in trial advocacy, international arbitration and interest-based negotiation
In 2015, Patson was seconded through the International Lawyers for Africa (ILFA) to the global law firm of Mayer Brown International LLP in its London office and Blackstone Chambers in London-UK where he worked under specialized barristers and solicitors in projects and infrastructure work, power, mining, construction and engineering and international commercial arbitration with a special emphasis on Africa.
Patson holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Uganda Christian University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice of the Law Development Centre and a Master of Laws (with a distinction) in Oil and Gas Law of Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen-UK.
He is retained as a professional advisor to the bar course students at Law Development Centre and a visiting Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Uganda Christian University. Patson has facilitated on a number of specialized trainings for both clients and professional bodies in his areas of specialization.
He has also authored a number of scholarly articles and treatises that have shaped the jurisprudence in Uganda. Patson is a member of the Uganda Law Society, the East African Law Society and Energy Institute, United Kingdom.
Batanda, a dispute resolution connoisseur, joins the Firm as a Partner from the Attorney General’s Chambers. In his seven-year enviable stint at the Attorney General’s Chambers, he litigated in the East African Court of Justice, Common Market for Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COMESA) Court, the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Constitutional Court, High Court and various Tribunals and Commissions. He also advised government on key matters in the oil and gas industry shortly before joining the Firm.
He holds a Master of Laws in Energy Law (with a distinction) from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland; Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Makerere University and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre. He is also a lecturer at the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kampala.
Patson and Batanda, join an already diverse team of specialized attorneys, and brings the total number of Partners at Signum to six (6).
